Jamie Wyeth has an extraordinary series of gull paintings - illustrating the 7 Deadly Sins. They capture gulls in all their sinfulness and grace, and echoing our own!
Thanks, Nia. And fearing that it might diminish the moment, I've not photographed that first light on gulls. I mostly look up and smile at it instead. :-)
This scene from Harold and Maude, which I saw first as a teenager in Boston, changed my perception of Gulls and got me to appreciate them. Thanks, Brian for adding to that appreciation. https://youtu.be/tKtTwfbhIF4?feature=shared
Oh, my -- I had forgotten that scene. Love it (and every single other moment in Harold and Maude)! Thanks SO MUCH for the wonderful recollection, Nate!
You have made my day, Chloe. That you devote your time to writing so beautifully and honestly, and yet have found time for gulls as well ... well, it means a lot to me. I wonder if the wildlife rescue centre ever gets any gulls, which would be a challenge indeed to rescue (but perhaps not to write about 😀). Thanks so much for being you and for writing and reading!
Well, you’ve been making my days with how generous you’re being with your extensive knowledge, truly (also, “fledgling geezer” 😂). We would normally take in gulls at the centre, but we had to stop a couple of months ago due to the rise of bird flu numbers, sadly. I don’t think we’ve ever had a baby gull in, so not my department, but now I’m learning more about their ways I’ll be sure to go and introduce myself—expect a gull post in the new year!
Assuming you're using your internet browser on a computer (and not a phone), if you encounter the paywall below my little video introduction there at Gull Central, you'll probably need to log in to Substack with your email and password in order to see my content for paying subscribers.
Just finished your wonderful, Intro To Gulls school. Dude, that was excellent! I learned a ton and had fun doing it. What a cool thing. You are such a great teacher. Thank you!
I concur. I have run the banding project on the gulls of Appledore Island in Maine for ten years, and every year, they burrow deeper into my soul with their outrageous and totally punk rock energy. They inspire me.

Do they ever! Thanks, Sarah!
"First light is gull light." Never would have known this and now will not forget!

I'm about halfway through the Gull lecture, and I'm mortified by how little attention I've been paying to them. Thank you for rectifying that, Bryan!

I am a new subscriber and am not a good navigator. How do I access the gull video. I am sure it is simple, but I need some guidance, Thanks
Sorry about any confusion, John. Here's the link to Gull Central:

Thanks so much, David. You've made my day (and it had already been a damned good day). I await your gull essay and, of course, photos. :-)

Oh, the Gulls of Appledore — sounds like something The Clash might have written. (Wish they had.) Thanks, Sarah!
